In this second issue of Samurai History Papers, I had originally intended to write a feature story about Sakuma Shozan. In writing about Sakuma, however, I have included Sakamoto Ryoma and Katsu Kaishu -- even at the risk of repeating myself. I have written extensively about Ryoma and, to a lesser extent, Kaishu, in my books and in my essays posted at www.ridgebackpress.com. But since I believe that this feature story embellishes the contents of those writings, and because the stories of both Ryoma and Kaishu so closely overlap that of Sakuma Shozan, I have taken that risk. In the last issue I indicated that my upcoming book about the Shinsengumi was due to be published soon. I should mention that there have been delays with my publisher but I expect the book to be released in the near future. For those readers who have not seen the first issue of Samurai History Papers, pertinent comments, suggestions and questions about Meiji Restoration History may be sent to the email address of Ridgeback Press ridgebackpress@mindspring.com. I will do my best to address them in future issues. Subscription Information Subscription cost for the quarterly Samurai History Papers is $25 per year (4 issues). Subscriptions may be purchased online at www.ridgebackpress.com, or personal check or money order mailed to the offices of Ridgeback Press. Published by
