Notes on Historique DBA

Tournament Armies

by Charles Stoll

I am hoping that many people will bring in their own DBA armies for future tournaments. So, we would like to tell you about the criteria for allowed units we developed to try to give all the tournament armies a reasonable chance of victory. We hope that you will find these rules accept. able. We aren't claiming this is perfect, and if you have any suggestions, we would like to bear them.

Here's the criteria we're using (for the 12 units in any army):

1. All units must be of a type historically available to the army (Pretty astounding, eh?). All of the unit types must be found in a published list for that army (WRG list or whatever).

2. Nine of the twelve units must be from the official DBA list in the the back of the DBA rules. You can change three of the units to any unit you want, provided you still satisfied rules 1. and 3.

3. The total point value of the army must be between 70 and 78 points, inclusive. Each piece has a point value equal to (its combat value vs. foot) + (its combat value vs. mounted) + (a subjective modifier, if there is one). For example, a spear unit (+4, +4) costs 8 points, and an auxilia unit (+ 3,+ 2) costs 5 points.

Many DBA armies fall into the 70-78 pt. range without any changes. (Though you can still make changes if you want.) Weaker armies will have to exchange 1, 2, or 3 units for tougher units, and stronger armies will have to do the reverse. If you don't have the units we will be happy to try to find some for the tournament. We're sorry for the hassle, but it is at most three stands, and it is for the noble cause of Fair Play. On the positive side, it gives the player some say in the army composition. (One final note: the DBA army compositions are not always in proportion to the WRG hosts anyway. I would think the WRG lists got a lot more careful work, so the DBA lists hardly strike me as sacred. So there.

Now, as for the subjective modifier business, we admit that it has the drawback of being, well, subjective. If you have some ideas as to how you would change these modifiers, please let us know. (To state the obvious, only units with significant special advantages or disadvantages need modifiers). The modifiers we have defined are:

Troop TypeAdjusted Pt. ValueAdjustmentReason
Pike87+1=8+3 supporting another Pike unit.
Artillery45-1=4Can only fire in opponent's turn if did not move.
War Wagon69-3=6Cannot attack; destroyed by any higher total.
Bow36-3=3Because they're so wimpy. They're only + 2 vs. Ft, & any Mid higher total destroys.

As we all gain experience, the modifiers may be further refined, but we hope we won't have to change them too much.

Here's the point values for all unit types:

    Elephants 9
    Spears 9
    Warband 6
    Knights 7
    Pikes 8
    Artillery 4
    Cavalry 6
    Blades 9
    War Wagons 6
    Light Horse 4
    Auxilia 5
    Scythed Chariots 8
    Bows 3
    Camelry 7
    Psiloi 4

Note: If interest warrants, we'll have a tournament where each person enters his own army, which he keeps through all the rounds.
