One of the few constants across WRG Ancients tournaments is discontent over the tournament scoring system. The latest NASAMW system, where a player's point total depends not only on their own games but on the aggregate score of their opponents, has raised numerous criticisms. Rather than providing a long discourse on the advantages and disadvantages of various tournament scoring systems, I would like to propose the following alternative system. At the end of the game the players total their point scores in the conventional manner (1 point for every enemy point destroyed or broken, 1/2 point for each enemy point shaken, in retreat or off board, etc). If one players score exceeds their opponents by greater than 10% of the army point total designated for the tournament (160 points for a 1600 point tournament) they are designated the winner and receive 2 points and their opponent receives 0 points. If neither player's score exceeds their opponents by 160 points the game is a draw and each player receives one point. To this amount each player adds the sum of two dice: 2d5 if the CinC's staff element is regular or 2d6 if irregular. These scores are summed after each round to determine the overall tournament standings. This point system has many advantages. It is very easy to calculate a persons point total after the game. It would also eliminate the need for fancy computer equipment to calculate tournament standings. A few of our club members feel that it is less random than the current NASAMW system. Perhaps the most appealing feature is that it provides people with an entirely new excuse for their poor standing in tournaments: the dice!
