Goulash Attila

Presenting a Serious Stew Recipe

by Howard Whitehouse

The Official Beef Stew of the Barbarian invasions...

6oz Germanic noodles, paid in tribute to the Huns
1 1/2 lbs stewing beef, hacked into cubes
2 large onions, chopped wantonly
1 large green pepper, seeded and hacked into pieces
1 1/2 tablespoons sweet paprika
18 oz can tomato paste, stolen
3 large carrots looted-from Visigoth farm, sliced
4 potatoes, looted from Visigoth farm, sliced
2 cups red wine pillaged from a Roman Villa
Dried Rosemary, fat, salt, pepper and enough garlic to bring down the Empire of the Caesars.

(I) Pillage far and wide until you have the ingredients
(II) Saute beef, onions and pepper while planning down fall of the Roman Empire. Drain excess fat.
(III) Add tomato paste, paprika, garlic and allow to simmer ferociously for 1 1/2 hours or thereabouts. Long enough to burn a village.
(IV) Boil carrots until tender.
(V) Add 1 cup wine to the goulash.
(VI) Drink the other cup.
(VII) Heat oven to 350°. Place sliced potatoes in casserole, cookie sheet or captured iron breastplate. Smear with margarine or lard and sprinkle with Rosemary. Place in oven for 20 minutes or until done, whichever you prefer.
(VIII) Drain carrots and add to goulash, stirring demonically for ten minutes or so. Add noodles at same time. Serve goulash on plates surrounded by sliced potatoes. Serves two hungry Asiatic nomads or five normal people.

Cooks without access to a modern gas or electric stove may use a burning Roman settlement if this is more readily available.

Attila the Hun died in 453 A.D. This recipe has no connection whatsoever with his unfortunate demise.
