The Marian Romans and the army of Mithradates of Pontus, both from about 90B.C., engaged In a game under the WRG 7th Edition ancient rule. Each had mustered approximately 1100 WRG points and were represented by 15mm figures supplied by Greg Ellsworth. He and Dave Sweet had the Ponfics on the north side of the board, while Greg Hauser and Dave Hornung commanded the Romans. It was lined up so the two Gregs faced each other in the west and the two Daves faced each other in the east. The Pontics were hampered by trying to stay away from Hornung's massive battery of boltshooters, placed on a hill near the middle of the Roman line. Ellsworth tried to take 3 units of Pontic cavalry around a woods on the Roman west flank. Hauser blocked him with an enterprising unit of legionary infantry which charged one of the cavalry units. Unfortunately for the Pontics, this unit of cavalry with the Commander in Chief leading it, was routed off the west edge of the table. Thus being lost for good and disconcerting the rest of the army nearby. The legionaries then drove a second unit off the board. Finally these hungry fellows hit the 3rd enemy cavalry unit, which was "Shaken" (WRG term for being in deep caca). Meanwhile the rest of the Romans were steadily pressing forward. The took some losses, but so did the now outnumbered Pontics and after a few more turns the Pontic players conceded the game.
