Ancient Tournament Report

Historicon 1989

by Scott Holder

The turnout for ancients events sponsored by the North American Society of Ancient and Medieval Wargamers (NASAMW) at HiSLoricon 89 was the largest in our history. I counted about 108-110 players in our various events. I also tried to scope out numbers for other ancient games (mainly run using either A to Z or the newly released Tactica rules) out in the main gaming area. It looked Eke another 30-40 people participating in those. With over 150 people playing ancient games at various times plus every spare table being used for pick-up games, it appears our little facet of the hobby is alive and well. So anybody claiming ancients is dead certainly was not at Harrisburg.

In addition to our tournaments, we had about six players in our Friday night scenario. Our Saturday evening beginners demo had eight people learning the pros and cons of WRG 7th. Some picked up on the nuances pretty quickly. Walt Leach and Danny Weitz ran this demo using Vikings and Anglo-Danish in 25mm. The terrain and figures were outstanding! Finally. Joe Walukonis ran his Tannenborg battle in 25-mm. I saw at least 10 people playing as the Teutonics crushed the Poles. Joe runs this game with some easy to learn rules he developed specifically for the battle. Joe tends to run this game at every Historicon and I urge everyone to at least watch the spectacle if not play.

We had 40 players in 15-mm Singles and 16 in 25-mm Singles. Fourteen teams played in 15-mm, 10 in 25-mm.

Tournament results were;

25-mm winner. Steve Simmons (Seleucid)
25-mm runner up: Adam Weitz (Sicilian Hohenstaufen)
15-mm winner. Rick Parrish (Hsiung-nu)
15-mm runner up: Eric Turner (Late Imperial Rome)
25-mm team winner: John Metcalf and James White (Seleucid)
15-mm team winner. Wayne Dare and Ian Salisbufy (Late Imperial Rome)
Courier Sportsman Award. Craig Tyrell
25-mm Best Painted: Ban Pecson (Successor Byzantine)
15-mm Best Painted. Steve Payne (Norse Irish)

We held our National Championship Tournament at Historicon this year. Thirty six people qualifid in previous heats, by special invitation, or Thursday evening.
The 'Final Four' were: Derek Downs and Chris Cameron (Florida) versus Wayne Dare and Keith Smith (England) Derek and Keith advanced to the finals running Seleucid and Late Romans, respectively with Derek defending the title he won last year in a close fought contest. Congratulations Derek!
The following businesses were very generous in their support for our events: Battle Honors, Irregular Miniatures, Minifigs, Ral Partha, Simtac, Viking Forge, Wargames, and Warriors.
