New Army?

by Terry Gore

Having finished our Annual SAGA tournament at Simcon, two weeks ago, it's time to turn my energies toward a new direction--in other words, I need a new army! Sure those Later Imperial Romans obey well, they move rapidly and usually win ... I won three games, drew one and still came in fifth!..so it looks like it's time to move on. Sound familiar?

After every competition, when we don't live up to our selfimposed expectations; it's often the dice, the terrain or our army which lose it for us... rarely do we take the blame and place it where it belongs, on the shoulders of the general.

I can't blame the dice, my rolls were better than average. The terrain wasn't bad, I got my woods and hill, usually somewhere in the vicinity of where they could be useful. The army did as ordered and consistently had a plurality of points in their favor at games end.

No, it was ME that botched things up, An army such as Later Romans needs to be used aggressively if you want to gather up large numbers of points. I was content to form up and let the enemy come to me ... as most did, but while I did not lose many points in this way, I sure didn't get many either. The conclusion I finally came to was that if I was afraid to use this army as an attack force, it was stupid to go into competition with it. How boring to be facing an army where neither of you dares assault the other for fear of losing! Remember, no points is not a win. The winners consistently went for the opponent and dogged him, bound after bound. Well I learned my lesson. Next year, you guys ... it's going to be Normans!
