Tournament Results

by Alex Aimette

Here are the results of the tournament. Scores are total points in two rounds / points gained by champion (used as tiebreakers).

Winner: Rich Jarosz, Medieval Polish, 12/3 prize - Free bag of figs from Old Glory valued at $30

Second Place: Iain Black, Picts, 11/1 prize - Gift certificate for $20 from Steve at Age of Glory (could be used for American language lessons)

Sportsman: Tony Marra, Nikophorian Byzantines, 7/2 prize - $20 gift certificate from John Gleason of Navigator / Mirlton Miniatures (was almost nabbed by his brother who was 'sure he'd want me to have it', but Tony returned just in time!).

Coveted Next to Last: David Manley, Vikings, 4/0 prize - $10 gift certificate from John Gleason of Navigator / Mirlton Miniatures (could be invested in dice that don't just roll '1s'. (Those must be on loan from Terry!)

Other participants:

Third / least motivated champion for an 'almost Second': Allan Kaplan, Normans, 11/0 Prize: a free manicure for his champion, who didn't break a nail trying to bring home the VP's for Allen.

Fourth / most uniformly painted army: Steve Lazok, Mongols, 10/1 Prize: another can of black spray paint for his Mongols, who were nearly PERFECTLY uniformly black except for one horse that had a little brown on it (clearly the non-conformist horse).

Conrad Campnest, (one round), 6/1 Prize: sufference award for most emotionally stressful game against Rich Jarosz. Apparently, it nearly swung just as steeply the other way (score was 7-5 for Rich, becoming 10-6 with Champion Points).

Jeff Ball (one round), 2/0 Prize: a wheeled set of drawers so that next time he doesn't have to borrow an army. His punishment was to take the Scots and Islemen against the Mongols.

Alex Aimette, Referee, Arbitrary Arbitrator, Prize Gatherer. Prize: a big fat lollipop for being suckered into refereeing all day and not getting to play!

But seriously, the play was marked with a solid spirit of good humor throughout the competitiveness. There was some lamentation but very little whining as large victories were pulled out of hats like rabbits and some saw their initial win turn bad. I specially thank Jeff Ball for helping to interpret the rules and coach newer players as I tracked down the $100 of prizes we gave away in the two tournaments. I feel that the top players played well and deserved to be in the running, and Rich's use of a foot champion in a cavalry army deserves special mention since instead of falling behind the army like baggage, he actully led the day in additional VP's for Rich! Great work!

And a plug for our sponsors, Dave Gleason of Navigator ($30 in prizes donated), Old Glory ($30 bag of figs), Steve at Age of Glory ($20 gift cert), The folks at Wargames (of West Virginia, for a $20 gift cert), and Bev at The Last Square (three 15% off coupons for the convention). I approached them at the last minute, during the tourney, and they were very generous and supportive with about $100 of prizes and such.

Although I didn't get to play, I had a great time helping everyone else, interpreting the rules badly/wrong, giving dubious advice to Steve Manley, busting on Rich and Steve, and nagging at the close games to finish up. Look forward to seeing all at Cold Wars for what I assume will be 25mm AW and 15mm MW. Jeff Ball also said that he's starting the skirmish rules and we hope to have them ready for CW, where I hope to debut a large Trojan War army.
