Letters and Rules Questions

From: Bob Bailey

1. When pursuing units run into a new enemy unit they stop and the combat takes place next turn. Also they don't get the charge bonus (they do get the pursuit bonus however).

[Actually, this will be changed to reflect the change in MW, whereas pursuits into a fresh enemy are fought out immediately. This puts a whole new dynamic into the game, reflecting the ebb and flow of the battle and how devastating a successful pursuit could be. The pursuing unit does not get a charge bonus, you correctly point out, but do get the pursuit bonus. Only one pursuit move and resulting close combat is fought per unit, however. If it subsequently also wins this one and breaks the new enemy, and pursues into another new enemy, that one is fought out next turn.]

2. It looks like Light Chariots don't have to evade when charged by heavier units like skirmish infantry do.

[Correct.]

3. Skirmish and loose order infantry are supposed to make a morale check when charged in the open by mounted. (My additional question here is when, and whether the morale check is negated if the unit is contacted within half the charge move, like the inability of a flanked unit to turn to face the charge if within half charge move. By the same token, can skirmishers be caught before they evade if within half charge move?)

[The morale check is taken immediately after the charge is declared and frenzy attempts have been made by the attacker. No negation, they have to take the test no matter what the distance. Same for skirmishers, they run their distance and then see if they can be caught.]

Observations: It seems to me that the meaning of the rules is to have units wheeling count their wheeled distance as doubled because movement would be rather Napoleonic/ACW like if you don't. (This is in reference to the statements in the rules that a 45-degree wheel occurs before movement, then the rules state that wheeled distance counts double over the distance the outside figure moves. In other words, is the 45-degree wheel in addition to any other movement (including further wheeling) or is the 45 degrees a maximum and the double-distance rule determines cost to perform the wheel?)

[Yes, the 45 degrees is the maximum and double distance the cost.]

It still doesn't seem completely clear to me how many attacking stands you count in the melee when a unit is flanked. Is it just the one in actual contact? I know the defender doesn't count any.

[Usually, just one and any behind it that are eligible. If the enemy is hit while in column, you get any that can hit his stands. See the section on the web site under Warfare Lore where I have examples of this.]

When not spelled out explicitly, are we to assume rules pertaining to cavalry apply to chariots?

[Yes.]

From the GoreAMwar rules group:

  1. I know fanatics charge even when fragmented. How about lance-armed irregulars?
  2. [Yes, since frenzy is an automatic charge, it is not an ordered charge. You cannot order a unit to charge if it is fragmented, but frenzied do not have to be ordered, they automatically charge.]

  3. Can a fragmented unit still be frenzied?
  4. [Yes. You cannot roll for frenzy as it is not allowed to have a charge order, but if it was already frenzied or rolls a '10' for a morale test, then it is frenzied even if fragmented.]

  5. If a frenzied cav unit gets a 2x recover order to hold it does it lose it's frenzy?

[Yes. This may seem a bit of a bonus, but it is a practical situation as you are calming them down as they are being held from charging.]

And finally an unrelated question; must 2x armed lance & bow irregular cavalry still make uncontrolled mounted charges?

[Yes.]
