Redoubt

28mm English Civil War Figures

review by Terry Gore

Received of late two packs of Redoubt figures, mounted 28mm miniatures of the ECW and/or Thirty Year's War. Overall, the production quality is very high, with little of no flash on any of the figures. The miniatures are 28mm and of medium heft (Barrett scale), with good animation. Redoubt casts these mounted figures in four parts. The horse is one piece, but the men themselves are cast in three parts; head, torso and lower body. This allows the purchaser to have all different looking figures in his units, a very good idea.

The 'charging' horse figure itself is a bit awkward, but once painted up, looks fine. The other horse, which is in a slightly rearing position, is better posed.

As to the figures themselves, the first pack is EXC-52 - ECW Lifeguards. These 5 figures are great looking, with plate armor covering their bodies and a sash thrown over their left shoulder. They carry either a sword or the 'horseman's hammer' with one figure empty handed for carrying a banner. They all were the burgonet helmet, open as well as with the buff frontpiece, allowing each figure to be distinct from the others. One helmet has a plume, for the commander of the unit. All figures are very well proportioned and fit in well with most other lines of 28mm figures. This pack of 5 figures sells for $24.95.

The other pack is EXC-53 - Heavy Cavalry/Arquebusiers. There are 12 figures in this pack and they also have a variety of poses, carrying pistols as well as carbines. These figures all have back and breastplates with tunic underneath, leather gloves and wear the familiar lobster pot helmets. The helmets are actually in two variations, one with the protective bars, the other without. One helmet is plumed for the commander. Also included are a trumpeter and a standard bearer to complete the command. This is a very nice unit and I especially liked the figure firing a carbine to his left, resting the weapon on his wrist. Very well done! This pack of 12 mounted figures sells for $49.95.

The Redoubt line is available from the Miniature Service Center, 1386 Portofino Drive, Yuba City, CA 95993. Their website is www.miniatureservicecenter.com.
