Letters to the Editor

From: Jeff Chrisope

Well, I'm a newcomer to AW/MW. I bought the rules at Historicon (I was buying pretty much anything I saw there, hence my horrific credit card bills this month), then promptly forgot about them and dug back into Warrior to try to learn the rules (still haven't managed to finish a game) ...

But then I saw something curious on this ancmed poll: there was this odd game called AW/MW that didn't have staggering numbers in the "which rules have you played at least once?" department -- old standards DBx, WAB, and Armati, and even Warrior, beat it by 2-3 times (the same factor, for the first two at least, as the difference between Yahoogroup subscribers, incidentally) ... but then I noticed that this AW/MW game was smearing them all in the "which rules do you play NOW" department. Sweet, I thought -- a game folks are actually playing.

And then I remembered: hey, I bought that rules set, I should actually read it!

And now it's love.

Seriously, though: I departed the DBx world for a number of reasons, but one was that I was looking for something that could be more accurately described as a simulation. Warrior was appealing to me in that regard, but I found (and still find) the system overly burdensome and the ongoing rule support extremely unsatisfying. I was about to give up, frankly, when I staggered upon AW/MW as I described, and the timing couldn't be better: the rules are detailed and yet simple -- in fact, they truly seem to be "Warrior done right" in my book -- and what's more important (to me, at least), you Terry have a great demeanor in support of the endeavor: you clearly believe the rules should be easy to understand, and you obviously care about feedback. I've grepped through the last six months of posts on this list, and I've never seen you adopt a "tone" even once, Terry -- very admirable.

So ... my hat is off to you, and congrats. I hope the Foundry gig gets your stuff out there to a broader audience, but in the meantime, know that the word is spreading ...

Hey Terry ... saw this post from awhile back, and had a few questions about it. I currently own AW and love the rules (as I noted in a different post), and I'm curious about MW. My sometime gaming group enjoys playing a wide range of periods, and if I can convince them that these two rule sets really are a single rules set with some period-specific tweaks, then I'll be more able to make the case that AW/MW is the way to go.
