- Fire & Flee - Can the F&F unit pick its target even is another unit is closer (Both in Charge Arc)? For that matter, can a Charging unit pick its target from several in arc and range?
[F&F can pick targets as can any NON-Frenzied attacker. If you are frenzied, you have to go after the nearest eligible enemy target.]
- When a unit is being charge it can fire at the charging unit only if the unit has defend orders?
[No. If it is not counter-charging and is armed with anything but javelins, it gets to shoot as the charger comes in. Roll for range (you roll a straight morale To Pass d10) and if passing morale fire at close range, otherwise at effective range.]
- When a unit comes onto the board from Off-Board reserves can it just by placing the front rank onto the table contact an enemy unit? If there is no room (stand width) available can is still come on...contacting the unit and say moving it a little...
[Contact can only be initiated by a Charge, pursuit, breakthrough (if using this rule in MW) or Advance into contact. You must have room to place the front rank on the table. If there is no room, you have to wait until next turn.]
- A SC unit performs a retreat move and as no enemy was charging they end their move five inches away from an enemy Infantry unit. During the fire phase they take a stand casualty and have to take a moral test. They suffer a minus 2 for having an enemy to the flank or rear and facing. My problem with this is that presumably the SC knows that there is no way the Infantry would ever catch them and they are not a threat to charge. My understanding of common SC tactics is that it usually involved a lot of riding slightly ahead of the enemy and fire/throwing things at him.
[This is a psychological issue, not a movement issue per se. Certainly the can outrun virtually anything. Does this make them superior to other units? No. They see an enemy threatening their flank or rear and will sometimes panic. Panic is not rational, it is reactive. The morale test for seeing this is what covers this situation.]
- Assuming the SC mentioned above pass their moral test what orders do you give them? Assuming the Infantry do chargge and you want to move out of the way, do you give them a retreat or an advance (in this case to the rear) In theory, you could take a free 180 and then use a retreat order to do another 180 and run away.
[SC and SI can always retreat from an enemy charging or moving into them. This is their big advantage over other troop types. Otherwise give then any order you wish.]
- This actually is a bigger question than just SC. A close order Infantry unit should have to pick up a disorder to move to the rear if it is already facing that way. At the same time if you give the unit an advance order, does the charge contact them since Charges move first?
[Yes. Better to give a threatened unit a Deploy order so that it can turn to face the expected charge if you haven't already turned him with the free 180 turn before orders.]
- The deploy order to turn and face a charge is a bit clunky. No matter how close you are to an opponents flank, when you charge he can just give the unit a deploy order and turn to face. This came up at the end of my second game in the tournament when Tony Marra (who played a very good game against an all cavalry army) pointed out that a series of flank charges which I thought would win me the game, would all be frontal charges after he gave the units a deploy order. I am not exactly sure I would change this rule, but it is frustrating to realize that your SC that is one inch from an enemy flank will not be able to charge across that inch, before the enemy unit a perform a ninety degree turn.
[Again, rules mechanisms must work for all units. Tedious pages of exceptions would drive me nuts and everyone else playing. Planning ahead is paramount to victory. If your opponent did not have enough orders to give all his units deploy orders, then you whack him. Force him to use his orders elsewhere and than flank charge him when he can't possibly react to all your charges or hit him from two directions, no deploy order will spare him then.]
