Figure Review

Mirliton 25mm
Late 13th C. Italian Communal

by Tery Gore

Received for review MEC 47 - Italian knight with chain mail collar, helm and lance. 1289-1310. This figure is of medium stature, not thin or too bulky as many recent '25's' seem to be lately. He is well-proportioned, in the larger 28mm Barrett scale. The horse is more the size of large pony rather than a full-sized destrier of the heavily armored Western European knights I am used to seeing. He has a full-face mail hauberk, breastplate, and plate on his lower legs as well. The horse and figure are in a 'stand at rest' position, with the lance (not included) held upright. The knight carries a heater shield and is supplied with a separate arm, sword, and shield allowing for variations of positioning. The horse is not barded. This is a nicely sculpted piece, with plenty of detail we are used to seeing on Mirliton figures.

The second piece received is ME-100 - Pavesaro kneeling, with hood and sword, holding the "Pavese" shield in front. This is an unarmored figure, though he is wearing an aketon beneath his tunic. The large pavise is supported by the figure's hand, which is held straight out. Again, the figure is of modest bulk and is well-proportioned. The face is reminiscent of one found in a Renaissance painting, with a large nose, exaggerated facial expression and a fearful look, probably not happy too be facing enemy crossbowmen or cavalry.

I've always enjoyed the production quality of Mirliton figures…no flash or filing needed, always a plus. I would recommend these figures to anyone considering doing an Italian Communal army. Prices are $1.55 per figure, with horses costing $2.60. Available from G.K.G. Gaming, 86 Regan Road, Ridgefield, CT 06877 (203) 431-8726.
