MW Questions and Answers

Rules Decisions

by Tery Gore

Here are a number of frequently asked questions from both SAGA as well as our rules discussion group along with their answers.

1. Is there any movement penalty or special order requirement for generals joining or leaving units?

[No. They simply move into contact and attach, or detach and move away.]

2. Units may wheel 45 degrees before moving. Is that exactly 45 degrees or up to 45 degrees?

    [Up to.]

3. Can orders be sent to units absolutely anywhere on the table (i.e. well beyond Command Range) if 2 order markers are expended?

[Yes. Now this may seem excessive, but if you have a Stalwart general trying to control a flanking maneuver while also attempting to maintain command control for units around him, it is impossible. Consider fast couriers, audio signals, etc. as how he carries this out.]

4. What happens when my archer units shoot an enemy unit into total destruction, i.e. it takes enough casualties to remove it from the table? Is it counted as routed? Or is it just removed from play and ignored?

[Any time a unit is destroyed, whether in close combat or as a result of missile fire, all units around it treat the lost unit as destroyed. If within range, they must take a morale test for seeing Routing/Destroyed friends.]

5. A bow-armed unit is the target of a "FF" (Feigned Flight or Fire and Flee) order. If it returns fire on the FF unit, can it move afterwards?

[First of all, in order to fire at a FF unit, the archers must have Defend or Deploy orders. With Defend orders, they cannot move anyway. With Deploy orders, they can make any allowable Deploy maneuver.]

6. My unit of SI is charging the flank of an enemy HC unit. They are in turn being charged in the flank by a unit of SC. What happens?

[The SI will have to retreat from the SC charge.]

7. Can a unit with pavises form Shieldwall?

[No. A pavise is not a shield. It only offers protection from mis- Siles, but not in close combat.]

8. If a unit has placed stakes with a Deploy order, can it pick them up again and move with them?

[Yes. You will need another Deploy order to pull them up.]

9. Please clarify that Longbowmen are allowed to fire with up to three ranks even if part of a mixed formation. For example, behind Burgundian pikemen or pavisiers.

[If they are the third rank, they may still fire.]

10. When lining up for a melee, where a 4-stand wide unit charges and contacts another 4-stand unit, but they are not colliding head-on, so that only one or two stands are actually in contact, do you adjust the units so that all the stands are in contact or leave it like it is?

[The player who moved first gets to align the stands, but you cannot bring more stands into contact. If only two stands are in contact, that is all that are allowed to initially fight.]

11. If archers have to take a morale check for being charged and become frenzied, can they still fire?

[Yes. The frenzy will only effect their close action, not their missile fire.]

12. If a unit charges another that runs away into delaying terrain, do the chargers have to go in after them and get disordered?

[No. You can convert your charge against another enemy in arc or halt the charge short of the delaying terrain. You do not have to run into terrain that will cause you to lose!]

13. Can an individual stand be targeted for missile fire? For example, the general's stand when not attached to a unit?

    [Yes.]

14. Elephants count as 4 figures (strength of 4) for casualties, but in all other cases as a one figure stand?

[Yes, they only get one die per stand when fighting or shooting, just like any other strength of 4 stand. It takes 4 casualties to remove an elephant stand.]

15. Does being in Shieldwall help when being fired upon from the right (unshielded) flank or rear?

    [No.]

16. If a charging unit fails to make contact against a missile weapon opponent, does the missile unit still have to take the +1 modifier for being charged/in contact?

[Yes, it is still firing at a charging target.]

17. What weapon on the chart does Scythed Chariot use?

[None, they get a +2 combat modifier when charging…that's bad enough!]

18. "Charging units may not normally fire missiles…." What are the exceptions?

[Under the Optional Rules, elephants and rear ranks of charging mounted armed with bow or longbow may fire while charging, but counting the enemy as in contact/charging for a +1 modifier.]

19. Two opposing units are both given Advance orders. The first to move actually moves far enough forward so that it is closer than 1/2 of them enemy unit's movement distance. Since the enemy unit must move at least 1/2 of it's movement distance, is it required to contact the first unit and initiate a close combat?

[Yes, unless it is skimishers. Normally, you will simply move into the enemy unit, initiating a close combat or, if a SI unit, you can remove the Advance order as the unit is unable to move at least 1/2 without hitting something. Obviously, if your unit is SI, remove the order and do not move that turn!]

20. If a charging unit that makes contact is itself contacted to the flank or rear by an enemy, does it retain its own charge bonus in the ensuing close combat?

[Yes. It will be disordered, however, and the flanking enemy unit will have a big advantage.]
