Old Glory Lombards

Figure Review

by Walter M. Speck

Well I thought I would take a look at the Lombard Cavalry, and I was pleasantly surprised. These will go very nicely with the Goths to add that touch of variety to your War band horse units. The packs I looked at were PLL 1 and 2 Lombard heavy and medium cavalry.

The heavies, essentially four different poses, not including musician and standard bearer. Troopers come in a two armor types mail and lamelar, all but two have splinted greaves on their legs. Helmets are spanglehelms with various cheek pieces and mail aventails, each figure has a different cast on head variant.

Only two of the troopers have cloaks. As for poses all are in a lance upright position, though with a little work an over the arm thrusting pose can be achieved on at least three of the poses. The musician and standard carrier are in scale armor and spangle helm, both are to be found in the Goth heavy/Romano-Britain heavy cavalry packs. Horses are a little small, but well proportioned, and come in a variety of poses walking and running I do not think any are exactly the same. Shields are all round and differ only in their bosses.

Medium Cavalry; a little less variety with this group, only three poses, no head variants save that between poses. All are in tunic and cloak, most are holding two javelins, makes for good skirmish cavalry. Long hair and beards are the rule for the day, "naturally" one is helmeted and in a two handed thrust position, one is in a over arm thrusting pose. Horses and shields are the same as the heavies.

As for size these mix well with War games foundry, though foundry are a bit crisper in their detail. As a budding Aetius I am always on the look out for something to add that touch irregular look to the Patrician Romans, these are it, packaged 10 horse and riders for $27.00 soon to be $30.00, still a very good deal! Also available are foot archers though I have not seen them, these are 30 foot for the same price. Carolingians are available for you Charlemagne out there. Give them a look I think you will be happy. Old Glory Corp. Box 20 Calumet, PA U.S.A. 15621 724-423-3580/ fax: 724-423-6898
