Book Commentary

by David Bonk

Based on your review I will buy Duex lo Volt...as I mentioned earlier I am reading Zoe Oldenbourg's The World in Not Enough. Although I did like her history of the Crusades, I was predisposed to dislike her stuff after reading her sappy defense of the Cathar's in the Massacre at Montsegur...where tradition has it that prior to storming a Cathar stronghold the Crusaders asked, "How are we to tell who is a heretic?" and were told "simply kill them all and let God sort them out.

Anyways, I digress. I am impressed by The World is Not Enough. It is apparently the first book in an historical trilogy, ala Henryk Sienkiewcz. The books seem to have been written in the 1940's and finally now translated from French. The first volume, The World is Not Enough, follows the fortunes and misfortunes of a minor baron in France beginning in the 1170's. Although the main character goes on the 2nd Crusade, very little is said about it. There is a much larger section devoted to his families participation in the 3rd Crusade. Most of the book is a fascinating look at life in medieval France during this period. The other books in the trilogy are The Cornerstone and Destiny of Fire. I understand that Destiny of Fire, which deals with the 4th Crusade, is rather dense, dealing with weighty religious issues. I do recommend The World is Not Enough and will let you know about the others.
