Archer Support Fire

by Terry Gore

I am pleased to announce that Perry Gray will be the army list editor for AW and MW. Any proposed army lists will be sent to Perry for verification before I do the final numbers crunching. This takes the load off me (alwyas a welcome respite) and outs the lists in the hands of a knowledgable and fair editor.

It has also been brought to my attention that archery support needs clarification in both rules sets. The rules state that an archer unit may not fire through another unit. By this, I mean a unit in front of them, but not in base to base contact. If the units are in base to base contact, the archers may be able to provide support fire to the unit in front of them, depending on how many ranks they can fire over.

Here is the clarification: AW/MW Rules Clarification:

Archer Support Fire:

Archers that are in base to base contact to with a separate friendly non-elephant unit to their front, may provide support fire provided they are eligible to fire according to the ranks they are allowed; i.e. a line of Burgundian pikemen, in a single rank has a line of SC crossbowmen directly behind them, and in contact. The SC may fire over the pikemen (they are allowed to fire from two ranks). If the pikemen were in two ranks, the SC would not be able to shoot as they are only allowed to fire from a first of second rank. In this instance, if the SC were instead close order archers, they would be able to fire from a third rank.

This allows the tactics of Charles the Bold to be used as well as allowing many foot armies the advantage of having a unit of high quality troops in the front rank, backed by a separate unit of lower quality missile troops. Remember, these are separate units. If a close combat results, losses are taken off the unit fighting, not the unit in missile support.
