Many of these works are (obviously) no longer available. I have used university libraries, which are an excellent resource for older out of print books such as these, in order to copy the illustrations, most of which, if pre-1922, are copyright free. My grandmother worked part time in a paper mill. She had the foresight to bring home any old, interesting history books which she saw arriving for shredding. She bequeathed her collection to me and I have retained these books for over forty years, from which I liberally make use of the paintings, prints and drawings for SAGA and other projects.

There are, of course, many books of much more recent scholarship which are reviewed in SAGA and in SLINGSHOT on a regular basis. Still, it is of interest to look back and peruse these older books, with their livelier, colorful language and prejudices intact.

Next issue: Reviews of Battles of the Bible, Museum Miniatures early Byzantines, more armies of Medieval Warfare, battle reports, letters, etc.
