Review by Terry Gore
By Pat McGill and Armand Pacou
For all of you fans of the Hundred Years War, here's a publication well worth adding to your library. This crucial battle is well told in a straightforward manner by Mr. McGill. The co-author, Armand Pacou, has translated much material not readily available in England, especially as it pertains to the biographies and heraldic roll. Part I - The Historical Account can be divided into two parts: Chapters 1-5 give a reasonably detailed background of events leading up to the siege; Chapters 6-8 are a detailed account of the siege itself and finally, Chapters 9 and 10 deal with the aftermath. Included in the aftermath is a chapter on the Battle of Patay (18 June 1429). The book concludes with a epilogue and bibliography. This effort is substantially supported by the excellent battle maps drawn by Derek Stone, whom I happen to think is the best around. Part II - The Roll of Arms and Biographies is an excellent book in its own right, complete with color reproductions of 66 banners and heralds carried by the participants. A short description accompanies each entry. All in all these two little books are a fine effort and highly recommended. Please note that Parts I and II are not sold separately. Write to Freezywater for prices and don't forget to include 2 IRC's.
