BYZANTIUM, THE APOGEE , by John Julius Norwich. Published by Alfred A. Knopf, NY, 1992. This Is a good general history of the height of the Byzantine Empire from 800 AD to 1081 AD. Norwich is one of the most renowned English historians and has previously written a book on the early Byzantine period and a two book history on the Normans in S. Italy. Not much detailed information on Byzantine military matters but an Interesting overall sketch of the Empire at its height. Around $30.00.

All these books are available directly from the publishers, who all take phone orders and credit cards. To contact them use the Publishers volume of the BOOKS IN PRINT which is accessible from all libraries and most bookstores. The Osprey book is, of course, available in most wargame stores. The Norwich book is in most upscale bookstores. I have seen the Kaegi, Haldon and Bartusis books In some specialty bookstores but this is uncertain at best.
