Of Note on Ancients

by Terry Gore

The majority of letters and returned questions, caught us by surprise. Granted, WRG Ancient Rules do take some getting used to and some local house rules to be playable, but to see the vehemance and scorn poured forth... It just goes to show that these rules, though used in tournaments, with a regular magazine and standard army lists to keep everyone honest are not well liked by many Ancients players. At least two-thirds of the respondents who didn't subscribe attributed their hesitance to the fact we were referring to WRG a great deal.

One writer ( see letters column) was more outspoken than most others but he pretty much summed up the consensus of opinion. So what do we do? You know, I said this was your newsletter and yes, we are thrilled with the response. As of editorial time over the respondents sent in subscriptions. In the first issue I asked what you wanted in a set of rules. Maybe if we all work together we can get one together we can all live withq but one stop at a time. Keep the correspondence up. Letting us know your thoughts is important. What neglected part of Ancients/Dark Ages warfare needs more research.

I began wargaming in the early '60s with home made rules and out out ships eventually moving on to Avalon Hill's Gettysburg game. Thank to Jack Scruby I bought my first (adult) miniature army, a French Napoleanic force and never looked back. At present I have a large collection of 15mm Napoleonics (unused in five years) and upwards of 2000 25mm Ancient figures. I can field armies of Greeks, Macedonians, Selucids, Carthaginians, Republican Romano Early Imperial Romans Late Romano Byzantines, Vikings, Saxons, Normans, Teutonic Knights and Crusaders, Although having played mostly WRG I am familiar with SHOCK OF IMPACT, ANCIENT LEAGUE, LEGION, NEWBURY FAST RULES, ANCIENT WARFARE, and some others I don't remember. I also have two 15mm Roman armies I haven't touched a brush to yet.

Presently, our local band of armies are engaged in the Conquest of England, 1066 A.D. Send in your suggestions as WRG doesn't really make it for Dark Ages play.
