Latest acquisitions to the editor’s library include: Uniforms of the Civil War (ISBN: 1585744220) It is a good general overview of the many uniforms and equipment of the armies. There are many contemporary photographs supplemented by colour paintings. The Waterloo Companion (ISBN: 0811718549) The next time that I visit Waterloo, this will be my guidebook. It provides an overview of the campaign, the armies (including orders of battle), the commanders and the battlefield. It is full of charts, tables, photographs, paintings, pen and ink illustrations and maps. Combined with the next book, it covers the battle in depth. Waterloo: New Perspectives (ISBN: 1860199968) This is part of a trilogy covering the last campaigns of Napoleon and his demise. What makes it unique is that the author had access to the complete collection of papers amassed by Capt William Siborne, who used them to build his scale model located in the British National Army Museum in London. The total collection consists of 700 documents; however, historians commonly used only 180, as those were the ones published by Siborne to substantiate his model. Many of the documents were provided in the language of the contributors including French, German and Dutch-Belgian combatants. The Shenandoah Valley 1864 (ISBN: 078581583X) This is Volume 11 of a series on the campaigns of the Civil War and was first published in 1883. It is based on official documents, field dispatches and other reports written during and after the campaign.
