Paper Castles

Book Review

by John Desmond

Castles: To Cut Out and Put Together is a two-book series published by Ballerophon Books. The text is done by J.K. Anderson and the models are by Nick Taylor.

The first volume contains paper parts for models of the White Tower of the Tower of London circa 1100 and Chateau Gailard, on the Seine between Rouen and Paris, circa 1200. Both are done in 10-12mm scale. The Scottish volume contains parts for Doune Castle, between Glasgow and Perth, circa 1375 and Caerlaverroc Castle on the shore of Solwa Firth circa 1450. Both of these castles are also in 10-12mm. Both volumes also come with a four page history of each castle, pictures of the buildings and diagrams showing how to put them together.

There are however, two drawbacks.

The first is that the books are part of a series of "coloring books for bright children". No child's play here. An intelligent adult will have hard work finishing one of these in two days time.

The second draw back is that they are printed in black on standard book weight paper (unlike the Usbourne series which are printed in four color cardstock). To remedy this problem I recommend taking the pieces to a copy store and have them reproduced at 120% enlargement on the heaviest stock you can get. If you could find a copier that would make 200% copies onto 22" X 35" cardstock, you would have a nice fortress for your 25mm troops. However, even with the drawbacks these kits are worth the price of $4 each. If you have an interest in the period, a sharp knife and patience you will be quite happy with the castles.
