MagWeb and Filler

by Wally Simon

1. PW received a check for $60 from MAGWEB for the second quarter in 1999. The REVIEW was 13th on the list of 'most popular in terms of receiving the most hits. The top three magazines each received about 10,000 hits each, earning them around $200, and the REVIEW has a long way to go with 3900 hits.

2. Another interesting item from MAGWEB is the fact that for the first quarter, the most popular article of all the magazines listed on the entire MAGWEB site was my review of the rules VOLLEY AND BAYONET (V&B). It's my contention that the reason the article received the most hits was due to the V&B author, Frank Chadwick, continually hitting the REVIEW time and time again, each time reading and re-reading the article, not believing the fact that someone had actually had a negative response to his rules set. Perhaps he thought that by hitting and hitting and hitting the site, he'd eventually erase the article.

Of the top 100 most popular articles for the quarter, the REVIEW had 11 of 'em.

3. The last two PW meetings were held at my house. I had mentioned that for many months, there has been an extremely poor showing at our meetings. My thought was that it made no sense to lease the church meeting facilities for so few attendees. And so, by having the meeting at my house, I saved the PW treasury a grand total of $90. As the TV Master of Ceremonies says: "Put your hands together, show your appreciation, and let's hear it for Unca Wally!"

4. The Ultimate Filler. In the MWAN March-April 1999 issue (Issue No. 98) of Hal Thinglum's magazine, he published a set of rules without knowing the author's name. Evidently, someone or something had sent Hal a set, and he thought this was a good way to fill up a couple of pages in his publication. Hal's caveat, printed with the article, was:

These rules were not labeled as to period, however, they would appear to be Franco-Prussian rules, except for the inclusion of Austrians.

Which says that not only did Hal not know the authors name, but he was puzzled as to the era of the rules set. I looked at the rules, and sure enough, there were the French, the Prussians and the Austrians. The Austrians showed up on the movement charts, but they didn't appear on either the fire or morale charts. And in the fire charts, Prussian and French infantry fired with the same parameters, i.e., same probability of hit, same ranges. That doesn't-sound very Franco-Prussian to me.

5. In this June issue is an article of my visit to the July HISTORICON convention. How can this be?, you say. The time-warp anomaly exists because this issue is being published in late July. I seem to be a perpetual 2-months behind in my publishing schedule.

Incidentally, at the July HISTORICON affair, when I met Hal Thinglum, I told him of the comments made in Paragraph 4, above. He looked hurt, but didn't say anything. If he had a subscription to the REVIEW, he would, most likely, have canceled it.
