News and Notes

Bob Hurst brought to my attention an interesting item from the INTERNET contributed by a fellow named Bill Armintrout.

    a. Bill stated that the relationship between scales of miniatures (6mm, 15mm, 25mm, etc.) can be obtained by use of the following formula:
(Figure Size in mm) = 1717/ (Figure Scale Ratio)

    b. For example, if the Figure Scale is 1/285, we get

      Figure Size 1717/285 = 6mm figures

    C. HO gauge figures are in the 1/87 scale:

      Figure Size = 1717/87 = 20mm

    d. If we look at 1/72 scale:

      Figure Size = 1717/72 = 24mm, say, 25mm

About the only problem with the above is that the current run of 25mm figures is nowhere near 1/72 scale.

    e. And, for the 15mm scale:

      15mm Scale = 1717/15 114, or 1/114 scale

2.The GENCON booklet arrived; the huge convention is scheduled for August. The flyers say the organizers expect 25,000 registrants. At $40 per head, they get 40 x 25,000, or $1,000,000. Plus extras such as the fees for the dealers tables. Obviously a big bucks convention. But I wonder how much actually "sticks" to the convention organizers, i.e., how much they actually pocket after all costs are accounted for.

I noted that in this year's booklet, they had not included the list of "do's and don'ts" from last year. Last year's prohibitions stated that the games and presentations could contain no sex and no lewd gesturing and no sodomy and no sadism and no masochism, etc. Evidently, it took all the fun out of the entire affair, and so the organizers dropped the whole thing.
