News and Notes

By Wally Simon

1. I attended the HMGS COLD WARS convention in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on the weekend of March 11, 12, 13. I haven't filed my usual rambling account of the goings-on because I was rather wrapped up in the WRG tournament, witness this issue's leadoff article.

2. Matt De La Mater author of LEGACY OF GLORY, took on Bob Coggins' NAPOLEON'S BATTLES in the latest issue of HISTORICAL WARGAMER. Matt used such fighting words as "ridiculous" to describe aspects of Bob Coggins' baby.

Bob indicated he'd not take it lying down; a rebuttal was in the making. And so we're about to see two key Napoleonic authors butt heads in the press, each with their own version of just how one should portray Napoleonic warfare on the table top.

I'll sit this one out.

3. Pat Condray, HMGS President, shelled out for another PW REVIEW subscription for fellow Board member Dick Sossi. Dick, a past subscriber, adamantly refuses to sign up for the current REVIEW... while Pat is just as adamant in wanting Dick to receive his copies. Am I missing something here? I should note that the reason Dick dropped out was that he was under the impression he was being insulted in the pages of the REVIEW.

"Why should I help foster a magazine that insults me?" was Dick's reasoning.

After pondering a wee bit, I sent in a submittal to the HMGS Board, proposing that the HMGS organization purchase lifetime subscriptions to the REVIEW for each current Board member. The proposed rate for each member was a minimal $100, definitely a bargain-basement price. At the COLD WARS convention, HMGS Treasurer Bob Coggins reported well over $30,000 in the kitty, hence my proposal, if accepted, wouldn't even scratch the surface. And, at the least, it would save Pat Condray an additional $12 each year.

As yet, there's been no reply from the Board.

4. At last year's HISTORICON, I vowed to enroll in the WRG tournament at COLD WARS. Having done did my duty, I can only say it was a one-shot jobby... everyone should experience it, should do it... once.
