News and Notes

1. Last issue I described the British colonial battle of Kush, stating that Tony Figlia had set it up, and that I could find no reference to the encounter in any of the texts I possess which bear on the British colonial era.

No wonder! Tony says the Kush engagement was taken from an article in an old, old, issue of Jack Scruby's TABLE-TOP TALK. This makes me feel better...

2. The Politically Correct Convention. GENCON '94 is to be held in August in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I received a brochure which asked me if I wished to present a game, and which stated that the '93 convention drew some 20,000 attendees.

One section of the brochure was titled 'Game Fair Event Standards', and it set forth 12 rules to guide those presenting events. Some excerpts:

Rule #2. "Lurid scenes of excessive bloodshed, gory or gruesome crimes, depravity, lust, filth, sadism, or masochism are unacceptable..."

Rule #3: "... Sexual activity is not to be used in game play... "

Rule #4:"...Explicit depiction or description of reproductive organs or any facsimiles is not permitted during game play."

Rule #6: "Minority races and nationalities may not be depicted as inferior to other races during game play."

Rule #7: "Evil shall never be portrayed in an attractive light..."

Rule #10: "... Crime must be depicted as a sordid and unpleasant activity."

Rule #11: "When... (a law enforcement)... agent is depicted as corrupt, the example must be expressed as an exception and the culprit should ultimately be brought to justice."

This went on and on. One wonders what actually went on at last year's convention... it must have been a really swinging affair; I'm sorry I missed it. But with all these new guidelines, it just doesn't seem worthwhile to journey to Milwaukee this coming August. The thrill, apparently, is gone. Besides, Rule #2, above, cracking down on depravity, lust, filth, and sadism, would render my scenarios unacceptable.
