Our hobby suffers from a lack of might be termed a "timely" newsletter...somethinq that comes out often enough to keep everyone informed on "current" events while they are still current. A case in point is the death of Jack Scruby, which occurred in the latter half of September. I still get calls from people who heard of the event via the grapevine, rather than through any of the publications. 2. The HMGS Board of Directors, meeting just after Jack Scruby died, voted to institute an award in Scruby's honor to commemorate the contributions that Scruby made to the hobby. 3. In November, I'm off to England for a three week vacation. The November REVIEW may, therefore, be a wee bit delayed... please don't send me any nastygrams if such is the case. 4. In preparation for the trip, I purchased British sterling traveler's checks on the Barclay's Bank. I prefer the British sterling checks rather than American Express because anyone - grocer, druggist, baglady, necromancer, warlock - anyone in England will accept the Barclay, checks, whereas on occasion, you'll find someone who'll balk at taking and cashing the American Express type. Extremely irritating are the rates charged for the traveler's checks. I got mine via the Riggs Bank in Washington, DC. Their rate chart is hung high for all to see: they BUY British pounds at $1.65 per dollar, while they SELL pounds at $1.70 per dollar. And then, after the aforesaid markup, they charge you another $10 fee for the privilege of doing business with them.
