1. Different Strokes In the October 87 issue of the REVIEW were my thoughts on a set of skirmish rules, Viet Nam style. Bruce McFarlane wrote in, asking why I included a sub-machine gun in the weapons listing. I had to blink twice before I realized this was just a carryover from my WW II skirmish rules days. Cancel the SMG. On another topic, I had restricted grenades to 5 inches, to be used primarily in the pre-melee phase. While I didn't list any range scale for the system, the rifle range was given as 20 inches and I voiced the thought that with a 20 inch rifle range, 5 inches for a grenade was too large. Bruce mentioned that, at a game he presented based on the rules, someone indicated a grenade range of 5 inches was too small. And recently, Mike McVeigh wrote: "The grenade range, as you suspected, is far too much... Essentially they are melee weapons unless fired from a grenade launched and a range of 2 inches would seem appropriate." Flyer 2. I write this a week-and-a-half before our end-of-February HMGS convention. Poor staff work (no names, please) resulted in a very late mailing of the convention flyers... I just received my own copy through the mail yesterday. Even poorer staff work (no names, please) resulted in a listing of my address within the flyer, for those who would pre-register, as my house on Middle Road, where from I moved, and wherein I have not resided since 1985. This will, no doubt, cut down the number of convention pre-registrations. It will also make a number of pre-registrants quite unhappy when they discover that the fees they tent in never reached us. I feel certain that those responsible for the poor staff work (no names, please) will beat their breasts most properly, crying "mea culpa!" and seeking forgiveness.
