The Fall of Fort Peck

American Revolution Wargame

by Fred Hubig

'The Rebels are coming! The Rebels are coming! To Arms! To Arms!', was the cry of Trooper Symes as he fell from his 40MM mount, which, in turn, had been tripping on its poor little leaden tongue for the last six inches. Alas, another grand battle was about to reverberate about Wally's 10 X 6 game table replete with GEO-HEX terrain and, wonder of wonders, an historical, realistic fort/custom built by Robin Peck of Small Worlds. The occasion of this affair was to test Mod #35-C of Wally's IMPACT-RESPONSE Rules, which have shown considerable promise for being included in the unending list of 'The Ultimate' Rules. So much for Rhetoric and on with the Battle.

True to Trooper Symes word, it was not long before the horizon was filled with columns of advancing figures. General Waldorf W. Simon's forces advanced on a wide front, deployed into Brigade Assault Lines and initiated a full blown frontal attack on the hapless British Garrison. The Rebel Army deployed with the Militia on the right flank and Continental Line regiments on the left. The assault went forward as flanking columns began to work their way around the fort and surround it.

General Frederick Ubigsob, recently transferred to the relative backwater post, which Fort Peck was indeed considered by the High Command, was fully confident the the rabble without the walls would he soundly and thoroughly beaten off, or worse, given the experience of past assaults on fortified positions manned by His Majesty's finest. Unfortunately for Ubigsob, his gallant Redcoated Legions had never contended with the likes of what was soon to pass.

Indeed, if someone would have foreseen the fate of Fort Peck, Ubigsob would have... had him drawn and quartered... No, that was another age... would have had serious doubt that such a strong position could have been taken so easily.

What transpired in the course of the day was a general and vigorous assault on the front and sides of the Fort. So anxious were the rebels to come to grips that they ignored common sense and the normal rules of seige warfare and stormed forward, hearing only the sounds of Wally's low dice rolls causing units to CHARGE after being IMPACTED and scale the Fort's palisade in ASSAULT formation. The British fought with their usual ferociousness and threw the rabble out time after time.

In fact, when General Ubigsob, powdered wig somewhat awry from the furious hand to hand fighting, finally ordered the sole surviving drummer boy to climb up on the ruined parapet and beat a parley, there wasn't a rebel within the premises. Sadly, there weren't many whole British, either, and hordes of randy rebels screaming for another go just outside the broken toothpick gate. Ubigsob was sure he would be soon exchanged and besides, duty in India certainly had its charm compared to this dingbat place.

This latest Mod seems to flow well and lends a certain foggy flavor to wargaming that is usually lacking in most rules. Even though we still enjoy our observation balloon viewpoint it is not possible to play General Little 'g' God due to IMPACT and RESPONSE.
