Defending the Canal is easy. Remember two things: 1. No more than 3 Turk divisions can be in the Sinai (rule 3.7). 2. The Canal takes ALL the Turks movement to cross (meaning they have to move adjacent to the Canal the turn before they can cross) and there is a 2L shift when they attack across, while the Brits ignore the Canal for all purposes. So by setting up one hex back from the Canal the Brits can react to all Turk moves. The sole exception is when the Turks can use a double move in the west-but that cannot happen until after Turn G-at which point the Brits have enough units to guard against any Turk threat in Egypt. If the Turks attack in non-hot weather turns they can only move two units up to the Canal-if they move all 3, the Brits will send one division to take Bitter Lake and one to Qaliya, putting the Turks OOS and eliminating them in the attrition phase. In hot weather the Turks can move all 3 divisions up if they move them into 4212 -4210 since the Brits cannot reach Qaliya thru the desert in the summer. But notice, while the Turks only need to occupy 4212 and 4211 to protect Qaliya, the third Turk division cannot be sent to 4207 or 4005-4004 because a British division entering Bitter Lake would put it OOS and again it would be eliminated in the attrition phase. So at best (and only in the hot weather months) the Turks can have a division in hexes 4212, 4211, and either 4210 or 4209. If the Turks have units in 4212-4210 the Brits should move one division to 4311 and 4310 and 2 CDCO each to 4312 and 4309. With a 2L shift the Turks cannot attack-the best odds would be 1-3, an automatic 2/0 loss. If the Turks set up in 4212,4211 and 4209 the British response is the same. If the Turks set up two units in 4211 and 1 in 4212 the Brits no longer need to occupy 4309, shift those units north, and again the odds become 1-3. In the non-hot months it is even easier, since as I said, the Turks cannot advance to the Canal with all 3 units-if they did, a Brit division in Bitter Lake and Qaliya would kill them. In short, no Turk attack across the Canal is even possible as long as the Brits have at least 2 divisions and the 4CDCO units. The only threat is that of a double turn, but it would take the play of 2 initiative chits (one to move the initiative to the east map, the second to move it back to the west) and that cannot happen before the Brits are reinforced in Egypt by 4 divisions and 2 cavalry brigades-more than enough to defend directly on the Canal (or more likely, by attacking and taking Qaliya). In conclusion-defend one hex back from the Canal, not on it-move up only after the Turks have advanced adjacent. And if he carelessly allows it, use your 2 IN divisions to cross the Canal and put him OOS. TGWiNE errata Allied Units and Chits
CP Units and Chits
Rules Changes 4.2 (Correction) The Turkish Surrender roll comes at the END not start of the Strategic Turn (after Fortress Surrender rolls). 7.32 (change) There is no event chit for the Russian Persian Expeditionary Force. Instead the Allied player may activate the RPF once per game on any turn in 1916 before the Fall of the Czar. All other 7.32 rules apply. 11.2 Change the first paragraph to read: No unit may end its move out of supply. Units may move through hexes where they are OOS provided they end their move in supply. Supply is checked for Strategic Movement at the start of the Strategic Movement Phase, for combat at the start of each individual combat. and for attrition during the Attrition Phase. 13.22 (Add) CP units in any of the three "K" hexes may use that hex as a secondary supply source. CP units outside those hexes, and all Allied units, may not use them as secondary supply sources. 16.2 (change) Last sentence should read 10 divisions, not 11. 17.7 (change) Do remove TGWiE chit 7.23 from play, instead of just treating it as no effect. 17.9 When using this rule remove the Arab Northern Army chit from play. CHV: Of course if Ted had but included the full Egypt Garrison (at least three further divisions clearly outnumbering the Turks) he would not need this old Tommyrot, however most of these boyos were awaiting Gallipoli so Ted removes them from play. Not the optimum solution. Back to Perfidious Albion #94 Table of Contents Back to Perfidious Albion List of Issues Back to MagWeb Master Magazine List © Copyright 1997 by Charles and Teresa Vasey.
