Big Chuck reports from the Powder Room
Stalingrad Pocket II (The Gamers): Lots of changes from the original "simpler" Gamers' Game. General feeling is that the Germans have been helped. Summary: If you are a Frontista you'll buy one. The rest of us will wait to be introduced. Invasion Norway (GMT): Its pretty has some accessible ideas and seems to be seen as superiorNarvik. Same problem though, Norway makes Italy look wide. Summary: Not for frequent replaying Emperors First Battles (Decision): "Doc" Decision and Clash of Arms seem to be the objects of massed sneering by the hobby commentators and this may influence player comments. This game is seen as simple and not very pretty (twin curses) and is not being played greatly Summary: not possible to comment A Bold Stroke (Spearhead): Radey's back tormenting our brown-shirted chums with shocking lines like "the soviet liberation of Kiev" (yes unbelievably this drives them all mad - good job they never read any real history or their melons would burst). The rules concepts are respected but the combat system seen as a little long-winded. Lots of reserves and stuff. Summary: One for the thinking gamer. Glory (GMT): Richard Berg's simpler, more chaotic version of his previous works has attracted some ecstatic American comments, although a few Wristas are concerned about the Fall From Grace. But the majority of the target audience are simply not playing it. But then ACW games do not attract much comment these days. Summary: Betwixt and Between. Hannibal (Avalon Hill): Is it as good as We The People? is it too cardy? well one thing is for sure people and playing and talking about it. Clear consensus is that it is a lot longer and much less "clever", but that still could leave it well ahead of the pack. In many ways in is the traditional gamers answer to We The People.
