WHAT THE PLAYERS SAY

What the real men think!

Big Chuck reports from the Powder Room

The Three Days of Gettysburg (Richard Berg for GMT): Usual split between salivators and those who reckon it is unplayable in any normal situation. Big colourful game, bit too much for some. Summary: Not for the evening session.

Marengo (Dave Powell for The Gamers): Stronger vote from the solitaire lobby, generally far too much work to be fun. Poorly resprayed-ACW. System badly in need of colonic irrigation. Summary: It is a smaller battle but still not lightly to be attempted.

The King's War (The Mighty Whitey for Clash of Arms): Map generally enjoyed, counters rather too cluttered. English proving difficult with those for whom it is a second language. System quick in outline but requiring a lot of thought. Campaign game far too long (but spookily enough being played). Summary: Play the scenarios only.

Empire of The Rising Sun (Bruce Harper for TAHGC): Third Reich in the Pacific - much awaited and seems popular with the Third Reichers, lots to argue and discuss. Summary: Get it if you have the prequel.

The Battle for Dresden (New England Simulations): Jolly pretty but way too simple for the Napoleonic fan, the balance should be the non-historical player who can accept this, but even they seem to object to the underlying Zucker system. But underneath it all, they do love the Emperor. Summary: I think not.
