"Strength and Honor"

July 4th Dawn Patrol

By Ken van Pelt

This annual event features 1/72 aircraft models played in the backyard of Ken Van Pelt's house each 4th of July. This year we featured Betty Bombers being jumped by a squadron of F6 Hellcats. I am writing this well after the fact and will try to give a quick summation of the days activities.

The kits came from a Recovery Sales outlet Store and were $5.00 for three aircraft. Each kit included one Betty Bomber and two Grumann Hellcats. These are a Lindberg product no.70956. Following in the tradition of never using last year's aircraft I put the kits together and prepared the backyard with a groomed appearance. On the morning of the flight we had eight club members present for a very early 7:00 am start time. We used the house rules: "Fighter Command" from several years back and they served well again for our flight mission.

The encounter had a flight of two Betty Bombers escorted by Japanese fighters vs. four U.S. aircraft featuring the tough Hellcats. The game was a "there and back again flight for the Japanese". Our job was to stop them. We enjoyed very good company and I remember putting heavy damage on one of the bombers before being forced down in my Hellcat. It was a great game and wonderful club tradition.
