Full Sail Campaign

Maritime News

By Kenneth Van Pelt

This is the first report from a long standing campaign game that the Lion's Den Wargamers have enjoyed since 1994! The game started with the Avalon Hill boxed game "Wooden Ships & Iron Men." We decided to begin at the earliest possible date within that game and run a campaign game that would trace our characters naval career through the American Revolution to the Napoleonic Wars. We have been at the game for four years and we are still exploring all of the possibilities of the AWI naval. The characters are all British Captains and the scenarios are designed to give them challenge and role playing possibilities. Encounter tables and Captain's Log books dominated the early years of the game. Players would be tasked with sailing a patrol around a given area of Colonial American coast and they would encounter privateers and other nations ships and do battle with them. The records they created and the skill at which they played the game earned them experience points. The reward was a move up the Admiralty list. This list consists of a steep climb from Rear Admiral of the Blue to Admiral of the Red.

Today the game has evolved into a beast of a very different nature. We have changed over to a new set of rules called As Per Margin by Aelred Glidden (As seen in MWAN). What we are trying to reflect in our studies of this time period is the naval actions in the West Indies during the American War of Independence. The game has changed into a fleet campaign game with the players controlling not just one ship but entire fleets of British Ships of the Line. We have modified sufficiently the As Per Margin Rules set that we feel a new name is more appropriate. The club members have referred to the change in mechanics and likened the new naval rules to the popular sci-fi rules Full Thrust; so we give you Full Sail!
