Twister Con 500

Welcome Race Fans!!!

By Ken Van Pelt

March 20, 1998 saw the running of the Twister Con 500 NASCAR scale racing league under the direction of Lion's Den racing league rules "Going The Distance."

The action was fast and furious as the front of the field flew to a strong lead. Race leader Dwayne McGee set a strong pace until the raw rookie talent of Joseph Duong set a new course record of leading 10 of 13 scale laps.

Darrlington speedway was rocked when this new talent was denied victory in the final laps of the event. Alex Bergman, in the closing laps of the race had closed the lead on what seemed like a rocket ride for the rookie Duong.

"I don't know what happened. All mechanical systems just blew out of the car! This was surely a pit crew fiasco (what are the odds of rolling six sixes on 1D6)," Doung quoted in a stunned after race interview.

Double 'ought' Bergman was followed in second place by Steve Bidwell and the rest of the field is listed in the order of finish: Carl Lathrop, Carl Lathrop. Alex Bergman, Joseph Duong, Joseph Duong, Dwayne Mc Gee, Carl Lathrop. DNF: Kevin Smith, John Anhaiser, Joseph Duong, Kevin Smith, Dave Pritchard, Kevin Smith, Dwayne McGee, Dave Pritchard, Mark C., Dwayne McGee, Alex Bergman, Dave Pritchard.

Going The Distance allows players to race scale NASCAR events driving a team of cars. (That is why you see multiple listings for the race finish above - each player was controlling three cars as part of a NASCAR team.) this event was run at Twister Con VI in Oklahoma City, OK. We were pleased at the reception a racing game received in an all military gaming convention.

At right, the winner: John Cordry and (name unavailable) receive awards from Kevin Smith (right).

When we were asked if the game was historical we replied that it was pre-historical in the sense that we were racing the Darlington Racecourse on the actual weekend of the real Darlington NASCAR race - we preceded the real event by two days. Go Fast Turn Left!
