On Warfare vs. Chess

"Strategy is often likened to a game of chess, but it is quite different. In chess, you make your plans andopening moves, get your pieces in balance, and then say 'Check. And whatever you do I shall checkmate you in three moves; so you may as well throw your hand in now.' Whereupon your opponent concedes victory. Not so in warfare! When you say, 'Check,' your opponent may reply, 'No, you are quite mistaken. This is where the fighting is going to begin.'"
