The Game

By Ken Van Pelt

It's a bee-u-tee-ful season for football ladies and gentlemen! I have become a statistic bound football fan and I gotta tell you there is no better way to enjoy an NFL season. For a few seasons now, I have wanted to run a club football game. I didn't have the confidence to pull it off in a competent fashion so I went on a fact finding mission and joined a league with nonwargamers. When money is involved it is necessary to do things correctly.

Here is what I found out: you pay your league fee of $20 to $25. This is the prize money to be won at the end of the season. You select a team of NFL players from all of the players available. The positions needed for a roster include 2 quarterbacks, 3 running backs, 4 receivers, 2 kickers, and 2 NFL teams for defense and special teams. The selection process is done just prior to the start of the NFL season. The draft I participated in was an auction. Each player was given 200 credits and purchased their team by bidding. I paid 135 credits for Emmitt Smith.

After the draft, a schedule is drawn up to allow head to head competition amongst the players. This league has eight players, and the schedule allows us to play each person twice. The playoffs will be week fifteen and the championship will be week 16. The winner takes 75% of the fees collected second place receives 25%.

The players on the roster are selected for each game as follows: You play one of the quarterbacks, 2 running backs, 3 receivers, 1 kicker, and one of the defenses. This league is a points only league. That is, only scores are tallied for a final comparison to determine winner. The other method involves comparing yardage in passing and rushing to get an end result. We score 4 points for a passing TD, 6 for a TD by any other player, PAT are worth 1, field goals 3.

Here is my current roster: Mark Brunnel, Jim Kelly, Emmitt Smith, Harvey Williiams, Robert Smith, Shannon Sharpe, Tim Brown, Chris Jones, Bert Emmanuel, Cary Blanchard, Nick Lowery, Houston Oilers, Green Bay Packers. I am currently: 4,6,1 for the season -- probably out of the playoffs, but it has been loads of fun!
