April 12-14 in Kansas City, HAHMGS held its annual Call to Arms. There was an election that tended to precede the show with a flood of rumors and gossip. Five seats would be voted in for the next two years-even year elections. The membership cast its 51 ballots in the following manner: Rick Nance 38, Bill Boyle, 36, Scott Hansen 33, Toby Giese 29, Mark Duncan 33, Ken Van Pelt 18, Joe Tremel 14, Harry Coyle 16, Jon Haworth 9, Dan Reardon 9. The election went to the "Old Guard". Although important, the election did not overshadow a lot of good wargaming during the weekend. The Lion's Den club put on three very exciting games. Two were 54mm skirmish games and the third was 1/64th winged outlaw sprint car racing! Best of Show TrophyFriday night the club ran "Kamaing Road Block." This was a Merrill's Marauders scenario set in 1944 Burma. (See Penny Whistle #22.) A big thanks go to our guest wargamers: Jared Brown, Jim Bodenheimer, Karl Bodenheimer, and Dave Andrews. These gentlemen brought a lot of enthusiasm to the scenario and an interest in learning a new rules set and scenario design. Gentlemen, your reward was participating in the "Best of The Show." Sands of The DesertSaturday, midday gaming session the Lion's Den debuted another W.W.II skirmish. "The Lair of the Desert Fox." This was the British Commando raid on Beda Littoria; to capture or kill Erwin Rommel. The scenery and North African villa were a real crowd pleaser. The scenario is featured in this issue of the Penny Whistle so look it up and enjoy! Saturday Night Thunder!Kevin Smith, of Wichita, KS, has created a racing card game that is packed with thrills. Saturday evening's gaming session featured two fast paced race events sponsored by Lion's Den Wargames. John Cordry was the winner of the first 1/64th scale heat. Ken Van Pelt won the main event race, however J.Cordry finished high enough in the points paying positions to win by 1 and 1/2 points over Van Pelt. Kevin Smith provided a race trophy of a No. #1 Racing Champions model car -- the kind used for the game. Look forward to seeing this event repeated at future Lion's Den gaming events. I think Kevin has plans to take the game to this years Origins convention. All in all it was a pleasant convention to attend. The traditional Pasta-Fest at Jon Marks was held on Thursday prior. This enabled us to attend more of the Saturday evening events. Lion's Den wargames are now making plans for the next public appearance. Punic Wars II? BorderWars?
