Happy Birthday to
The Penny Whistle

A Short Club Profile

Lion's Den Wargaming Club

by Ken Van Pelt

The Penny Whistle newsletter is now one year old! Happy Birthday! I wanted this newsletter as a vehicle of club information for the Lion's Den Wargame Club. I anticipated that it should last at least one year and now it has reached that plateau. I am confident that it shall continue.

The name and initials on the masthead are in honor of Robert Louis Stevenson. He named his collections of poetry Penny Whistles when he would sell them for that amount. He was also a wargamer. I like the name because it gives a hint to the reader just about how serious most of the issues covered in this newsletter are treated.

The Lion's Den Wargame Club is a clique of gamers located in the south Kansas City area. We wargame many historical and fantasy game systems. We gather on a weekly basis in the private houses of the members. These games are closed to the public, or if open, by specific invitation only. The interested wargaming public can catch up to the Lion's Den at the two local wargame conventions sponsored by the Heart of America Chapter of the Historical Miniature Gaming Society (HMGS). The spring convention is called Call to Arms and Border Wars is the fall convention.

All Lion's Den members belong to HMGS. This is a highly recommended organization with many positive benefits to its membership. Another venue for wargamers are the local hobby shops in K.C.. The Lion's Den club is beginning to put on regular monthly games at Table Top Game and Hobby. Come and meet our members at any of the above mentioned events and you will enjoy good gaming and friendly people.

MARTIAL ELEGY FOR SOME LEAD SOLDIERS
BY: R.L.S.

For certain soldiers lately dead
Our reverent dirge shall here be said.
Them, when their martial leader called,
No dread preparative appalled;
But leaden-hearted, leaden-heeled,
I marked them steadfast in the field.
Death grimly sided with the foe,
And smote each leaden hero low.
Proudly they perished, one by one:
The dread Pea-cannon's work was done!
O not for them the tears we shed,
Consigned to their congenial lead;
But while unmoved their sleep they take,
We mourn for their dear Captain's sake,
For their dear Captain, who shall smart
both in his pocket and his heart,
Who saw his heroes shed their gore
And lacked a shilling to buy more!
