Graphics Innovations
for Bonaparte in Italy

by Kevin Zucker

The release of Bonaparte in Italy was delayed by some trial-and-error in the graphic design process (see below). The counters are now finally ready for the press; the last printer's proof was approved yesterday. The box art is on its way from Japan. The map itself should be ready this week for a preliminary artist's black & white proof, which we will go over in detail before having negatives made.

The Counters

As you recall from last time, Joe Youst jumped in to tackle the marker images. We were trying something new, however, and the first attempt (and second set of negatives) came out almost illegible. Joe handled the problem ably, clearing away the backgrounds and enlarging the images.

At the same time, we asked Joe to replace Masahiro's flag with an Austrian double-headed eagle on the backs of the Austrian leaders. Somehow, nine leaders in a row appeared on the proof with no eagle, so we had to get another disk and another set of negatives. When you see the counters, however, you will forget the delay!

Since counters have the longest lead-time (a six-week turn-around time for die-cutting) we are now looking at a late January or early February release; i.e., 60 days behind the schedule announced back in October. We all want this game to come out - it would have been great to have it in your hands by Christmas - but we are not going to sign-off on components until they look the way we want them to!

Back on November 13, we processed a number of Bonaparte in Italy charges for the specific purpose of starting the game's graphic production. At that time we were not anticipating the delays we'd be en-countering! If you were among the 28 individuals whom we charged in November, please accept our thanks for your help in making Bonaparte in Italy a reality!
