Letters to the Editor

Kenrick Fearn

I am gob smacked* - I thought the quality of Highway was good - but the Sun of Austerlitz has surpassed even my wildest dreams. What a beautiful game - even if you hate nappy wars the quality of this game begs to be played.

*It's English slang to mean - can't talk because of excitement or disbelief.

The French translation of "The Sun of Austerlitz" rules will be available on the internet on this new site http://www.ludistratege.net which will group all translations in French of strategy games. For the moment, it's just starting.

Jean-Philippe Tondeur

For the Waterloo Battlefield, I know nobody ready to take an attitude that may be in conflict with the politicians; because of lack of interest, time and resources. If you know someone, give him my e-mail address...

[Editor sez: Jean-Philippe is leading the fight to preserve the battlefield from commercial and other development. He is also the publisher of 'Editions de la Belle Alliance,' and has several volumes in print on the battle of Waterloo: "Hougoumont," "Les Armees de Waterloo, 1815," "Ceux qui Bravaient l'Aigle," "Le chemin d'Ohain (l'attaque du 1er corps)," "La Papelotte," and "La Haie Sainte." These are lavishly illustrated, a must for any Waterloo aficionado, even if you don't read a word of French.

Why is there no association for the preservation of the Waterloo battlefield? This needs to be created. You have many interested people, do not overlook that!

There is an association "1815" dedicated to re-organise the Lion site. It's a political association (with representatives of the 4 communes (Waterloo, Braine-l'Alleud, Lasne & Genappe), very closed. Its goal is touristical (that is not my interest). Beside this association there is no way to do organize anything except at individual level (and cost) as I do.

[Ed sez] I see no reason why, simply because there is one organizaiton that is doing some work in this area, that another organization could not also make some independent efforts. This would not have to be a semi-governmental group, but a free association of individuals who would volunteer their time and resources (as you do). If YOU can do it, OTHER people may like to join and HELP YOU.

We have several associations here in the states for preserving Civil War battlefields. I know a lot of gamers in Belgium. I hope they will read this and make a decision providing help with your efforts, and get in touch with you.

I would like to start an International Association to support your work. One must always be prepared to put pressure on politicians. Otherwise they just look out for their own interests.
