Four Lost Battles

The Stepsisters of Dresden, 1813

by Kevin Zucker

"I greatly fear lest on the day your majesty has gained a victory, and believe you have won a decisive battle, you will learn that you have lost two." (Marshal Marmont)

The 1813 Quad will include a fifth, strategic-level map, at 10 miles per hex, which will allow players to influence exactly when, and with what forces, the four tactical battles will take place. This 17 x 11" map will look like the map on pages 6-7 of the Struggle of Nations Scenario Folder, with large hexes about 15/16".

Napoleon, in his maxims, writes-off successful timing of concentric attacks as being too difficult to coordinate, but I think his maxim (it's quoted in an article in Wargame Desgin Nr.7) overlooks the kind of limited, nibbling objectives the Coalition went for. There is a great opportunity for a multi-player game: Macdonald, Oudinot, Napoleon, Barclay, Bluecher, and Buelow. The whole campaign was over in two weeks. By Sept. 6th, a battle in or near Leipzig was certain.

On the strategic map what you can do is limited. There will be no administration or Attrition. There are 33.3 tactical hexes to a strategic hex. An entire 22 x 17" game map from the lower level fits into one hex. And the tactical battlemaps are small: Dennewitz and Katzbach are each 22 x 17", Grossbeeren and Kulm are just 11 x 17". In the multi-player game the Allies must map their strategy prior to game start, thereafter they can only communicate in writing (with a delay). The game starts with the run-up to Dresden (21 Aug.), and lasts through 6 September (4 Strategic turns).
