Dark December II

Playtest Report

by the readers

The playtesters made the following changes in an attempt to help the Germans:

Units will be allowed to move ZOC to ZOC.
a. no, please see number 67 above. 17 AM Peiper can ignore ZOC.
a. OK.

Leader unit Command Range cannot be traced through enemy ZOC.
a. no, please play as defined.

Armored Infantry can move into Forest hexes.
a. ok, but the buck stops here, no Tanks or Armored Cav. in Forest.

Forts will negate Artillery Concentration when in Towns and Combined Arms at all times, this will distinguish Leaders from Forts.
a. OK, changed rules.

1. Comment - I am pleased that you guys are not attacking Monschau early in the game.
a. additional comment, this is really very important to the design IMO and I will be watching this closely at all times. Please try to break it.

2. Extend the benefit of a 1-4 die roll for the 150th Panzer to 17 AM as well as 16 PM.
a. OK, changed to 17 PM.

3. The change of allowing Armored Infantry into Forest hexes seen as positive.
a. OK, but see above, this is as far as we go. We have to make it work like this one way or another.

4. There does not seem like much Peiper can do with the free movement through ZOC change made.
a. OK, agreed, this needs more work. We need a Peiper Breakout to happen more times than not.

5. 5th Panzer Army broke out 17 PM into Bastogne and Houffalize.
a. Excellent! The US should be brittle to mistakes and German successes early, but should not become the norm.

6. Elimination of a US unit is what led to the breakout. This should not happen often.
a. OK, understood, see above.

7. Tank units not being able to retreat across non-bridged rivers a good thing.
a. Agreed, left as is for now.

8. German units not being automatically in supply the first few turns a bad thing.
a. I added text to make them in Supply no matter what through 17 PM.

9. 10th Armored should have the possibility to have all units entering at road D, ie. toward Martelange.
a. No, this was a specific point of discussion and later agreement between Bruno and I. It is a design for effect thing. Only CCB made it to Bastogne in real life.

10. Strategic Movement entry costs should be rounded down rather than up. - Randy
a. Changed.

11. Exploitation will be difficult due to having the 'clear the road' and this is a good thing.
a. Agreed. This was one of my early initial goals for the design.

12. Need a section of the rules for River Crossing.
a. Not added specifically, but think it is covered now due to other changes, please keep in mind when re-reading rules.

13. US re-took Bastogne 18 AM, but the Houffalize road was still open toward the west.
a. I think this was OK..

14. Need to explicitly state that Tank and Armored Cav cannot cross unbridged rivers. There is a conflict between this and the Advance After Combat rules.
a. Done.

15. The US 4th Infantry held in the southeastern corner.
a. As it should be able to. Again, there will be a learning curve for the US. The original game saw the lower right hand corner of the map hold for the US, ie. the Southern Shoulder. This is on a par in importance with the US holding Monschau in the north.

16. Stacking during Advance After Combat may be needed to generate a viable Campaign Game scenario.
a. noted, please leave as is for now.

The overall impression of the game was favorable.
a. Cool!

I will return to this game again.
a. Way Cool!

I liked the Road Rules, but the Victory Conditions will have to be adjusted.
a. Agreed, absolutely. Let's get the mechanics working and then define Tournament scenario Victory Conditions.

The Terrain Defense level system worked well and is simple.
a. Yes, I liked this system 22 years ago and still do. It is definitely viable in this day and age. DD was ahead of it's time IMO.

The Tournament Scenario will need to be playtested extensively to come up with good Victory Conditions.
a. Agreed, see above.

Additional Comments:

I am worried about the mis-use of the Defensive Reaction Phase. Could a German player use it as an Exploitation Phase early in the Game? I can just see Tommy G. doing something like this!

I wonder if the US 17th Para Div. is going to be too much if the Germans get near the Meuse. They were in the area at time, and I'm sure they would have been released had the Germans actually crossed. This may get to be a play balance and/or countersheet decision.
