In April we reported, "Scientists say the arctic ice cap has been disappearing at an average rate of 14,000 square miles a year since 1978." On June 12, 2000 a related story actually made page A1 (cont'd on page A25) of the NY Times... "Increasingly, mainstream scientists are concluding that a buildup of heat-trapping gases like carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has contributed to warming in the last 100 years ... caused by the burning of fossil fuels, destruction of forests and other human activities." The report can be found at http://www.nacc.usgcrp.gov If carbon dioxide levels continue to grow at the rate of recent years, ... "the average temperature in the country would rise 5 to 10 degrees in the next century." That is equal to the total rise in global temperature since 16,000 B.C., and would bring "bumper crops in the heartland, chronic erosion of the coasts, summer water shortages and winter floods in the West and a future New York City that steams in summer like present-day Atlanta."
