Researching the Navies
for La Guerre Expansion Set

by Kevin Zucker

1792 Squadrons
British: 113 Ships of the Line, 75% of which would be seaworthy once crewed.
French: 76 (13 lost in harbor of Toulon).

1793 Squadrons of new French allies
Holland 49 (less 13 captured 1799)
Spanish 76 (56 in commission)

British naval construction
1793-1801, 24 Line

In game terms, this translates to three British Squadrons at start in 1792 rising to six by 1801; three French squadrons in 1792 joined by two Dutch and two (later three) Spanish squadrons. We'll have to add another squadron for Holland in the counter mix for this project. If anyone has data on the establishment of the navies of this period, and in particular the numbers of seaworthy ships of the line, I'd enjoy hearing from you.

At the outbreak of hostilities in 1803, France had two squadrons (23 ships of the line and 25 frigates), her ally, Holland, had one squadron. Meanwhile, Great Britain had four squadrons in commission, and another five in reserve. [Note: one squadron is assumed to comprise 24 ships of the line plus other vessels.]

In 1804, Nelson had 55 ships of the line and France, 42 (only 13 ready for active service; others would be once crewed).

On 1 January 1805, the Royal Navy had 175 ships of the line, presumably 75% + were seaworthy (six game squadrons). Assuming a 50% increase in the construction program after 1801, the 175 line must have included 20 captures.

The Expansion Set will cover the Wars of the French Revolution; there is no date or price fixed for release. The product will include one counter sheet (with the leaders of the revolutionary armies and their enemies) and one booklet.
