Exploitation in Drive on Paris

Game Strategy and Tactics

by Dave Demko

The first time I played Drive on Paris, my opponent and I had a few moments of confusion regarding various units' movement capabilities in the Exploitation Phase. We resolved our questions pretty easily at the time, and I later confirmed our interpretation with Dean. In other words, this brief piece is, in effect, anti-errata. The rules properly explained how to handle these units during exploitation.

Still, they might have struck others as unclear. So, to avoid any awkward moments for you, here's a summary of Exploitation-Phase movement. In all cases, per series rule 11.0b, units that begin the Exploitation Phase in an enemy zone of control may not move. See also the corrections for Drive on Paris on page 26 for other useful information about German unit movement during the Exploitation phase.

UnitsCapability
Reserve MarkerThese units may not move in Movement phase; they may move up to twice their MA in the Exploitation phase (game rule 1.1d).
Yellow tagThese units may move full their full MA in both the Movement and Exploitation Phases (game rule 1.1a).
White tagThese units (including the Taxis/Buses) may move full their full MA in both the Movement and Exploitation phases during turns 1-8. From Game-Turn 9 on, they move like other German infantry (game rule 3.1).
German no-tagThese units may move their full MA in the Movement phase. On a roll of 5-6 on one die, they may move their full MA in the Exploitation phase; otherwise they move 1/2 their MA in the Exploitation Phase (game rule 3.1).
Other no-tagThese units may move their full MA in Movement phase and 1/2 their MA in Exploitation phase (game rule 1.1b).
HQs , Siege GunsThese units may not move in the Exploitation Phase unless they are marked as Reserve (game rule 1.1b).
TrainsTrains may use their full MA (along railroads only, of course) during both the Movement and Exploitation Phases (game rule 1.2b).
