Tactical Problem #4
3 Brigade Stands Firm

(A Raging Storm)

by Lee Forester

February 3, 1944. Kampfgruppe Graser is charged with eliminating 3 Brigade of the British 1st Infantry Division at the Campoleone Salient. 3 Brigade is dug-in in three separate battalion perimeters which are linked for mutual support. But the German counterattacking force has supporting armor and the advantage of flexibility.

This problem derives from Scenario Campaign 2 (5.3) from A Raging Storm. Below is the British set-up. Your job is to plan the night assault against 3 Brigade, providing the following information:

    1) Before setting up the game below, plan your initial German bombardment (cf 3.1a).

    2) Set up the British units below, and provide a brief analysis of British strengths and weaknesses along with German strengths and weaknesses (one paragraph each).

    3) Write your initial Op Sheet(s), providing graphics if you wish.

    4) Provide a German set-up (mainly company locations, exact hexes only if it is important).

    5) Detail your infiltration movements.

    6) Give a narrative on how you wish to execute the attack, noting your basic tactics, priorities etc. Do not get carried away with contingency plans; I'll assume that you will exercise flexibility within the framework of your Op Sheets (three paragraphs max).

Notes: A plt = one platoon from A company. 6 pdrs are taken from battalion units and from 81 AT. This write-up shouldn't be too long, so limit yourself to essential points. Make sure you take into account the relevant special rules, and remember that the attacks starts during the night! Note that despite KG Graser set-up instructions, only map A is in use for this problem. Send entries to: forester@hope.edu
