Some players feel that the Red Army has little chance of overwhelming the Germans at the Dnepr River line. They should try the following two optional rules: Maximum EffortIn each combat the attacking player has the option of declaring a Maximum Effort. Step losses against units of both sides are then doubled, with these exceptions: If the result on the CRT is zero step losses for the attacker, it is increased to "1" (0 x 2 here is 1). If the result on the CRT is zero step losses for the defender, it remains at zero for him. Add in Soviet losses suffered while attacking Fortifications and German loss reductions while defending in a Fortification after doubling. Examples: Bridgehead DefenseSoviet units defending in a Bridgehead hex receive a column shift of one to the left (IL) on the CRT. In addition, Bridgehead markers reduce the losses of Soviet units defending in such hexes by one step and increase German losses by one step. However, German Barrage Markers negate all these effects (cf. German Fortification effects).
