Tactical Problem #2:

Counterattack on Mt. Euncona

by Lee Forester

[Ed. note: Though this problem calls for a bit more detail, its scope is smaller that problem #1. So I hope lots of you grab Leros and devise your solutions.]

November 12, 1943. 0740: As a part of the German invasion of the island of Leros, 1-1-FJ was assigned the task of clearing Mt. Euncona (C42.23) to cover the main German landing in zones 6 and 7. They were successful, sustaining some casualties in the process. However, a good part of the British Kents was nearby in reserve. That unit has just implemented orders to counterattack Mt. Euncona in order to use its commanding field of fire to stem the German advance inland from the beaches.

The problem: As the British player, clear Mt. Euncona ASAP, while keeping casualties low. If possible, destroy the 1-1-FJ, which will probably defend the objective as long as possible. Maximum time allowed: 2 hours (6 turns), after which other German forces will be assumed to have linked with 1-1-FJ. Success within 1 hour is preferred.

Set-up:

British (may begin in any mode)
A Kents: 1 plt each in 36.24, 36.23, 37.22
B Kents: 1 plt each in 39.27, 41.28, 43.28
Kents: 1 plt (7-6-2) in 36.22, 2x3-inch Mtr (off board, available for support)
AT Bn: 1x2 Lbr in 36.19
MG Bn: 1xMG in 36.19
Lgt AA: 1xBofor in 36.19
9 FA: 3 HE, no smoke available.

Germans (all in combat mode)

1-1-FJ: 1 plt each in 42.24, 42.23 (-2 steps), 42.21 (-1 step); 1xMG (-1 step) in 42.23.
Air support: not much, but possibly a sortie or two.
